Create new groups wizard

Step 1

Naming your new collection

So that you can easily identify your groups later on, assign a name that is unique and easily recognisable. You can reuse an existing name if you wish, but it is not advisable as it may lead to confusion.

One example could be using the name of the module and then adding a brief description of the groups as a quick prompt. If the students are doing coursework for module 05ABC123, then name the collection, 05ABC123 - Coursework Groups.

Simply type a name into the box, taking care to provide a unique name. The name will be used to catalogue your groups, and need only be recognisable to you.

Selecting the students

It is now necessary to choose how many different modules you will populate your new groups with. There are two options and you must select one of them.

You must select one option to progress to the next stage of the wizard.

Step 2

Selecting a module

In this step you will select which students you want to include in your groups. To do this, you select one or more modules. If you want to include students from more than one module in the assessment group, you will need to have selected multiple modules in step 1.

The modules listed are all those you are associated with on LUSI as, for example, the 'responsible examiner'. The list is updated every night so if you have only just been associated with a module, you may not see it in your list until tomorrow. If you need to be associated with a module, talk to your departmental admins/secretaries. They should be able to add you through the LUSI system.

Select the module(s) you wish to use with these groups. You must select a module before you can progress to the next stage of the wizard.

Step 3

Auto-creating groups

Having created a new collection, and assigning a module to it, you are now ready to add your groups.

Many assessments will have ten or more groups, so rather than you creating them all by hand one at a time, Web-PA can help you create groups automatically.

Firstly, you should see the number of students available in the module(s) you have selected. If the module selected has no students, you will receive a warning here. You can still continue creating groups, but you won't be able to assign any students to them until the CIS information is updated. The system updates form CIS every night, so you may have to wait 24 hours.

Now you know the number of students available, you can decide how many groups you Web-PA to create for you. You can always add/remove groups later, so don't worry about being too exact here.

Please Note : Auto-created groups will be named sequentially (e.g. Team 1, Team 2... or Group A, Group B... etc). If you need to name your groups differently, then you can skip this page and create them yourself later. Just select 0 in the number of groups to create box, then click the Next button.

Naming your new groups

The next two boxes define how your groups will be named.

First, enter the text that will begin every group name (e.g. TEAM, GROUP or ) The sequential numbering will be added to the end of this text.

Finally, choose which numbering style you want. If you entered Group in the previous box, and choose Alphabetic here, your groups will be named Group A, Group B, Group C...etc.

Again, if this kind of group naming doesn't suit you, just tell the system to create 0 groups now, and then create your own groups later with whatever names you want.

Step 4

Confirming your choices

This page simply confirms the choices you have made previously, and gives you a last chance to spot any mistakes and rectify them. If you have made a mistake, just go back and change it.

Step 5

What Next?

Your new collection of groups should now have been created. If you need to change your groups, or if you just want to begin allocating students to them, you can go straight to editing your new groups.

Otherwise, you can choose to return to the Web-PA homepage, or maybe proceed on to My Assessments by selecting it from the main menu.
